Remembering Celebrating Dreaming
Joanne Taylor shares some thoughts about her Remembering, Celebrating and Dreaming with Kath Bourke.
This is a good time for me. I like meeting with Elina and people in my house to share about the things I have been doing.
It is hard to look back sometimes and remember what you did in the year.
It is easy when you have photos or notes to help you.
I can feel happy with what I have done and I sometimes and surprised that we have been to so many places with lots of people sharing with me.
After I have done lots of talking with Elina, Assistants and others like friends and family I have a special day to share with everyone in the community. Elina helps to send out invitations so everyone one knows the right day to come.
I have my day to share in my House. I lead the day with the person who has helped me prepare.
We sing the songs I like best. The Assistants show photos of me with all the people I have shared with during the year. People are usually very surprised at all I do.
After the photos I can tell everyone the things I am going to try in the next year or sometimes in a few years when I am ready.
We light a candle and each person holds the candle and tells me the things they like in me. They sometimes say a prayer for me. Sometimes they smile and laugh and that is because they are happy about me.
After everyone has said something I hold the candle and say thank you.
Then everyone holds out their hand and sings our blessing song.
We then have something to eat and drink. I don’t eat cake so the assistants make me a quiche cake.
It is a happy time when people tell me how well I am doing and thank me for sharing with them.
There is lots of talking before everyone goes home.
Elina and assistants write down all we have shared in my own folder. They gave me a frame with pictures of me at gatherings and doing special things to celebrate my year.
